Sunday,
02-25-01

Yesterday we had a great day with ENE winds at 20-25 knots and maintained a boat speed of 7.5 knots. Seas 8-10 feet sending us on our way. Caught a small Spanish Mackerel and Yellowfin. Also hooked a fish but a shark claimed it. Reeled the line in with nothing left on the hook but a fish head. We are trying to get used to the late night watches again.
At noon, winds are light. ENE 5-10 knots with 3-5 foot seas. We are sailing wing and wing now with the mainsail to port and using the spinnaker pole to hold the jib starboard. 2pm-Hooked about a 6 foot sailfish. Jumped once then spat the hook out. Air and water temperature is still 81 degrees. Winds lighten up anymore we’ll have to start the motor. Spotted dolphins join us on the bow and one does an amazing 15 foot jump! Check it out.

Monday,
02-26-01

Well we’ve had to motorsail due to lack of wind. By the end of the night the seas are flat, water temperature has dropped 7 degrees and all sails are down except the poled-out jib. Not much to do but eat and read.

Tuesday,
02-27-01

Still the same conditions and still motor sailing. Around 2pm hooked a 4 foot Wahoo. Yahoo!!! Fun fish to catch! Got 12 huge steaks from it. Special thanks to the fish. Continued on still motoring and bored. We are now in nearly 2 miles water depth. Air and water temperature continue to gradually drop.

Wednesday,
02-28-01

Still motor sailing. Dead Calm!

Yo Ho, Yo Ho a pirates life for me,

Drink up me 'earties, Yo Ho

Yo Ho, Yo Ho a pirates life for me,
We extort and pilfer, we filch and we sack,
Drink up me 'earties, Yo Ho

Cold front stalls on the Texas coast as we approach. Drastic change in weather! Nasty with poor visibilty due to the heavy fog. We’re all on close watch for oncoming traffic. Thankfully have radar to help with our “blind” approach. Seas are 5-8 feet with 10-20 knot winds out of the north. Visibility at one point was maybe 50 yards. Sea temp is now 61 degrees and air is in the low 40’s. Hear via VHF radio that two collisions have occured right outside Port A. due to weather and there were men overboard. All were rescued accept there was another report of a sailing vessel returning also from Belize that lost a man overboard 30 miles off Galveston. Alas, he hasn’t been seen. Reach Port Aransas at 9:15pm. Tie up for the night and wait til tomorrow to check in at customs. We are all back in our winter clothes and pull the blankets out for bed. What a change! We’ve been barefoot and in shorts for the last 3 months. Welcome Home.........

Friday,
03-02-01

Captain calls customs at 9:00am but we are waved through without being boarded. Head for Rockport at 10am. Once again we are greeted with dolphins just as when we had left. Weather is dreary and so are we but fog has lifted. We got a surprise guest appearance from Charles Bronson, take a look! Reach Chiriga’s slip near 1pm to find Captain’s JoJo and “Rocketman” waiting with a bottle of champagne. Captain pops the cork and, as if Chiriga herself was toasting with us, the cork shoots through the air hitting the mast with a celebratory “ding”. It was a perfect moment. Later, Jerry’s Betty Ann and friends join us in the celebration. Fantastic 3 months! Until next time......
