“I had a match but she had a lighter,
I had a flame but she had a fire,
I was bright but she was much brighter,
I was high but she was the sky,
Oh baby, I was bound for Mexico,
Oh baby I was bound to let..... you .....go.....

I don’t know much about Cinco de Mayo,
I’m never sure what it’s all about,
But I say I want you and you don’t believe me,
You say you want me but I’ve got my doubts,
Oh baby, I was bound for Mexico,
Oh baby I was bound to let..... you .....go.....”

Left Placencia 8:30 and dropped anchor in South Water Caye 3:00pm. We were just going to anchor for the night and then continue on back to Caye Caulker but after seeing how beautiful South Water Caye is, we decide to stay a little longer. Tomorrow we go explore the isle.

Monday,
02-12-01

In the morning we head to the reef shallows and collect conch. We don’t know how to clean conch but Jerry meets “Jr.” who shows us the proper way to clean them and look for conch pearls. We also met a woman named “Beanie” who runs a little snack shop on the isle. South Water Caye has been in her family for generations and now part of it is hers. We clean the conch on Beanie’s dock and attempt to eat raw, a clear noodle cartilage looking thing from the conch. Beanie eats two of them explaining that it is considered a delicassey. Brady gives it a try. I slurp it down and it hits the back of my throat. In an instant, I decide that if I swallow this thing, I am gonna puke, so I spit it out into the water. “Beanie” & “Jr” find this hilarious. I guess it’s an acquired taste? We return to Chiriga for the Captain’s conch fritters and lobster pasta a la Brady. Conch are strange creatures. Take a look at this pic and you’ll see what I mean. And yes, those are eyes!

Start off the morning catching a couple of Snapper off the boat and then onto the reef for snorkeling. Below is a kaleidoscope of colors. Beautiful coral, especially the purple fan coral, and wide variety of tropical fish with colors so bright they almost seem to be glowing. We try to capture the life below on film but underwater filming is difficult since we can’t look through the viewfinder while the camera is in the underwater housing. We keep trying though in hopes we can by chance capture what we are seeing.

Wednesday,
02-14-01

Raise anchor at 7:45 am and set sail for our return back to Caye Caulker. Today was one of our most pleasurable sailing days. Perfect weather with winds 20-25 knots. We maintained 7-8 knots boat speed with Chiriga heeled over about 20 degrees. On our way, we trolled and caught a couple small tuna. Dolphins joined us and raced on our bow while we sailed up inside the reef. Covered 70 miles and reached Caye Caulker around 8:00pm.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
To those special in our lives. We miss you.

Thursday,
02-15-01

Went snorkeling off the reef again. We’re getting better at underwater filming. Did our last round of catching lobster since the season ends today. Went to town drank beer, again.

Friday,
02-16-01

Got groceries and drank beer, again.

Saturday,
02-17-01

Got cokes and rum and drank beer, again. Oh yeah, we left Caye Caulker for San Pedro at 11:20 and dropped anchor at 2:05. On the way, Brady caught   about  a 4 foot Great Barracuda.

“oocha, Barracuda........ahhhhahh yeaahah......”

Heart

Met up again with the old Holiday Hotel posse, Kris and Oscar, and drank beer, ...........again. Belize has no local A.A. chapter, oh well. “Carny-vol” started early with the election of Miss San Pedro in the town square, lots of good local fun. Funds raised from the event went to help the people of El Salvador who have faced 3 earthquakes. Also met the crew of “Second Wind Too”, David and Francine, good people. Later, Brady experiences the new night club, Jaguars. Lots of bad, uninhibited fun. Got “home” at 4:15, no lobster pasta so went to bed.
